interview: „The goal every season is to be champions. We are within touching distance of Leverkusen, so there’s no reason to question this goal for the season. The attitude of everyone involved makes me certain that we’ll do it. We have now become champions 11 times in a row and I don’t see anyone here who doesn’t want to complete the dozen. I see that every day when I look from my office onto the training pitch. I don’t want to get into football clichés, but the title is still a long time away. Leverkusen are having an excellent season, but I’m sure they will still show weaknesses at some point. And then we have to be there“
You once spoke of your team’s “boring football”. Is a lucky, “dirty” title enough for you again, or should the style of play be more attractive and convincing
Dreesen: „I said that on the occasion of the 1-0 defeat against Werder, where we played mostly like that. We’ve had exciting games this season, like in Dortmund or against Stuttgart, but we’ve also won a few games in which we weren’t necessarily dominant. But your question was about HOW we want to win the title. To be honest: I don’t care. I would like to win it - whether on the last day of the season or before, that doesn’t really matter“
Dreesen on the Champions League: „We had an incredible streak in the Champions League: 40 group games unbeaten. We qualified for the knockout stage after just four games. The team is there and ready when it matters most. Of course you also need a bit of luck and good form on the day. We have to approach the two games against Lazio with great concentration in order to get to the quarter-finals.“
And then finally reach the semifinals after 4 years?
Dreesen: „Absolutely. I said at the beginning of the season that FC Bayern’s goal is always to reach the Champions League final. Just over ten years ago we celebrated this wonderful triumph at Wembley. It would be fantastic if we could go there again this year.“
Dreesen on the criticism against Tuchel: „First of all, it is important how the team and coach work together. With 50 points after 20 games, we are in a better position than a long time ago, namely in the 2015/16 season under Pep Guardiola. Thomas is certainly a person who says his opinion, and in this respect he sometimes offends people. You can find that good or bad. I have no problem with the fact that there is criticism sometimes. Factual criticism of our game, for example, is completely fine. We are a club that stands for diversity and a diversity of opinions. But where we defend ourselves is when criticism becomes non-factual and personal. I’m of the opinion that it is appropriate for us as employers and for me as CEO to protect the coach.“
Do you trust Tuchel to carry out a possible upheaval after this season and to further develop the team at a high level?
Dreesen: „Thomas is an excellent coach, he definitely has what it takes. My predecessor Karl-Heinz Rummenigge once said that a team is actually always in transition. And he’s right. We now have some young players who should be the future faces of the team. Aleks Pavlović is a very positive surprise, Jamal Musiala has long been on everyone’s lips. These are faces of the future. Leroy Sané is having an excellent season. But every team needs a balance between experienced players and younger ones who can still develop. That’s why our future also belongs to a top star like Harry Kane, who is a real asset, not only on the pitch, but also as a motivator and a leader. So I wouldn’t speak of an upheaval in the summer in the sense that we’re turning everything upside down. We’ve actually almost never done it that way“
What consequences would a trophyless season have for the coach?
Dreesen: „That’s a question that I’m not concerned with.“
Dreesen: „I’m very happy with Christoph Freund as the new sporting director. Working together is just fun, it’s focused on the matter at hand and wonderfully calm. And to those who thought our winter transfers were too easy: That’s complete nonsense! I recommend reading about the importance Sacha Boey had at Galatasaray. Or Bryan Zaragoza at Granada. Both absolute regular starters there. And Eric Dier certainly surprised many with his appearances, not only on the pitch, but also when he showed up to training in shorts at minus seven degrees. He gives the team a new spirit. And all of these transfers have a lot to do with Christoph.“
Dreesen on Max Eberl: „I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but: The topic is a matter for the supervisory board. As chairman of the executive board, it is also in my interest to have the best people on the team, with the highest possible quality and competence. FC Bayern’s ambition must be to have the best on the pitch and the best in management. And we always excel when we act as a team everywhere - on the pitch and in club management“
