France has rallied European Union support for a joint statement from member countries, which would look to ensure a “link between annual performance in domestic competitions and all European competitions,” according to a draft seen by POLITICO. The statement has been signed by all EU members apart from Spain.
French President Emmanuel Macron’s government is now urging the European Commission to draft legislation that solidifies that link. The language connecting domestic performance and international qualification in the French memo goes further than any previous EU statements, which have never before targeted the Super League so explicitly.
Put simply, it would mean: UEFA’s Champions League, in; A22’s Super League, out.
A22 Sports Management, the promoter company behind the Super League, has been attempting to resurrect their project — which first launched before instantly collapsing in April 2021 — since a Court of Justice of the EU ruling in December last year cracked open a door for their plans.
The French push to legislate the Super League out of existence comes as European football’s governing body UEFA prepares to host its Congress in Paris on Thursday.
The EU has taken a stance against the Super League for years and the French document presses the Commission “to reflect on appropriate ways to pursue the 2021 Council Resolution regarding the safeguarding of the openness of competitions, sporting merit, solidarity and values in sport.”

Bayern Münchens Vorstandsvorsitzender Jan-Christian Dreesen hat eine Teilnahme des FC Bayern an einer möglichen Super League erneut kategorisch ausgeschlossen. «Für uns ist das überhaupt keine Alternative. Unsere Haltung ist unumstößlich», sagte Dreesen im Interview der «Welt am Sonntag». Die Aussagen der Super-League-Organisatoren, der deutsche Fußball-Rekordmeister könne ein «bedeutender Bestandteil» werden, wies Dreesen deutlich zurück.
«Es ist für mich nicht nachvollziehbar, ja irritierend, wie sich die Initiatoren der Super League über unsere klaren Aussagen hinweg setzen und darüber fabulieren, dass sie gerne Bayern München an Bord hätten», sagte Dreesen. «Das zeigt, wie wenig Respekt sie vor dem Fußball wirklich haben. Ich kann es nur ganz klar sagen: Es gibt keine Super League mit Bayern München.» Aussagen wie von Bernd Reichart, der als Chef des Sportprojektentwicklers A22 die Pläne für eine Super League vorantreibt, verbitte er sich.
Dreesen äußerte zudem, es gebe in der Club-Vereinigung ECA die klare Haltung gegen eine Super League. «Unsere tiefe Überzeugung ist, dass die nationalen Ligen das Fundament eines jeden Clubs sind», sagte der Bayern-Chef. Reichart hatte zuletzt in einem Interview Mediengruppe Münchner Merkur/tz über die Super League gesprochen.

Joint declaration
Earlier Madame Oudéa-Castéra had joined 25 other EU sports ministers in issuing a joint declaration reaffirming the support of their respective governments for the European sports model.
Significantly, the document invites the European Commission (EC) to reflect on appropriate ways to implement a November 2021 Council of EU resolution to protect and promote the model.
This paves the way for both the EU mandate 2024-2029 and the new EU Work Plan on Sport 2024-2027 to incorporate specific actions aimed at further refining the model, in particular protecting football against breakaway, closed competitions that run contrary to the values of existing club and national team football in Europe.
The French Sports Minister warned: „There are threats to our sporting principles, and we need to be vigilant when it comes to… protecting our European model, which is so close to our hearts.“
