Seid ruhig, er will uns etwas sagen… :speak_no_evil:

Sehr reflektierter Typ, feinsinniger Humor, druckreife Sätze. Gefällt mir, was er sagt.

Tactics

Tuchel’s formations — which are likely to have tweaked in/out of possession within games but still give an idea of the overall set-up — largely consisted of a 4-2-3-1 at Dortmund, which also moved into a 4-3-3. He was fond of a 3-4-3 that he would later use at Chelsea.

His Paris Saint-Germain formation was largely 4-3-3, with a focus on wide forwards, but he switched it up with 4-4-2 (or 4-2-2-2) to maximise the rich array of attacking quality he had at his disposal.

At Chelsea, we know about his predominant use of a 3-4-3 (or specifically a 3-4-2-1), which provided a greater focus for the wing-backs to attack and create.

In his only full season in west London, Chelsea’s ‘direct speed’ (how fast a team moves the ball upfield) and passes per sequence show how considered his side were in their build-up — which is typical of a dominant side. But Tuchel’s defensive tactic was to control the game with the ball, and this is reflected in the numbers.

One person at Bayern Munich who should be particularly excited about the arrival of Tuchel is Matthijs de Ligt.

Rewind to last summer, and De Ligt was Tuchel’s top choice to become the new linchpin of Chelsea’s defence. The plan was for him to immediately replace Thiago Silva in the starting XI, providing a more youthful and dynamic leader who would enable a shift from a back three to a back four.

It is easy to see how the lightning-fast Alphonso Davies and technically-brilliant Joao Cancelo might flourish in similar circumstances at Bayern.

Bayern’s lack of an elite focal-point striker in the wake of Robert Lewandowski’s departure might actually suit Tuchel, though their array of nimble forwards will need thick skins to cope with his exacting standards. For much of his Chelsea tenure, he picked his front line based primarily on their ability to play to his system with and without the ball; Mason Mount and Kai Havertz became key figures as much for their pressing excellence as for their technical skills.

Freestyling on the pitch is unlikely to be tolerated at Bayern. Tuchel wanted his Chelsea players to think for themselves, but that only extended to picking between the three or four options that existed in any position within the tactical structure he set. Some players respond to that style of coach better than others, and how each Bayern player reacts to it is likely to play a significant role in determining the hierarchy of playing time.

Tuchel’s structure should at least help Bayern control matches with possession in the manner that Chelsea generally did — with Joshua Kimmich likeliest to be the Jorginho figure in midfield — and his emphasis on pressing to generate turnovers high up the pitch should give Sadio Mane, Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman plenty of chances to run directly at scrambled defences.

Most importantly, the speed with which Tuchel transformed Chelsea on arrival in January 2021 is surely high up the list of reasons Bayern were so keen to bring him in now.

Bayern and who could benefit

Nagelsmann’s problems at Bayern started in the second half of last season when he changed to a ‘pure’ three at the back that allowed him to field one extra attacking player. Players felt unhappy with the formation, causing Nagelsmann to go to a classic back four in the new campaign. The hybrid three/four-man defence he played during most of the last few months rarely brought out the best of his side.

There’s an expectation Tuchel will keep things simple by going back to the 4-2-3-1 blueprint that’s been the bedrock of Bayern’s dominance in the last decade. Sane is exactly the type of player who should benefit from better connections in close proximity. The 27-year-old was singled out for encouragement and attention by Tuchel in his first training session on Tuesday.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s confidence will be boosted, too. It was Tuchel who recruited him for PSG in 2018. It’ll take a few weeks before a clearer picture will emerge but, for the moment, Bayern are hoping that Tuchel’s clear structure and famous attention to detail (such as proper passing) will lead to more consistency, instantly.

Back to Pep time
